Maximum Age to Receive Donor Eggs

In the best interests of egg donation recipients, the SASREG (South African guidelines governing egg donation treatments) guideline for recipients receiving egg donation treatments advise that the natural mean age of menopause is 51.  The usual cut off age is 50.

In specific circumstances, where potential egg donation recipients are aged between 51 and 55, exceptions can be made (after consultation with SASREG) where the recipient's circumstances are considered.  These factors include:
  • Report of physician and effort ECG regarding the recipient's general health and safety during pregnancy at this age - with special consideration to aspects such as diabetes and hypertensive risks.
  • Report of obstetrician and gynaecologist that she is fit for pregnancy.
  • Mammogram
  • Counselling on egg donation and age related matters.

This proposal requires approval of SASREG.

Egg donation clinics willing to consider such patients include:
  • Cape Fertility Clinic (cape Town)
  • Fembryo Fertility (Port Elizabeth)
  • Gynomed (Johannesburg)
