Preserving Fertility

Dr Le Roux, President of SASREG presented the concept of preserving fertility at the SASREG 2015 conference.

He highlighted the times when persons would consider freezing their eggs and such cases included pending cancer treatments, risk of POF (premature ovarian failure), fragile X and trans gender patients.

He estimates that around 1/3 of patients decline this option and that it is not recommended for persons over 40.

He gave some insights into his special achievement of a real case involving the world's first ovarian tissue transplant resulting in a live birth.

Proposing the option of egg freezing before chemotherapy encourages patients to see the future positively and focus on children, life and goodness, not only the disease and gloom.

With IVF fertility treatments, it is encouraged to rather freeze embryos than eggs.
